Where Does Herr's® Stand On Genetically Modified (GM) Ingredients?
At Herr's®, our number one priority is the safety of the products we produce for our customers. Some consumers have requested clarification on the food industry's use of ingredients that come from genetically modified crops. There is wide consensus that genetically modified ingredients are safe. Organizations such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the UN World Health Organization (WHO), the US Environmental Protection Agency and US Department of Agriculture have approved biotech crops as safe. The benefit of GM crops is that they generally require less insecticide, use less energy to produce by farmers and result in higher crop yields.
Based on the efforts of advocacy groups and a few state legislatures, consumers and retailers are naturally asking about non-GMO ingredients more than ever. Herr's® is examining non-GMO ingredient sources, where they make sense and apply to our consumers' desires in given product categories. For example, all of our potatoes in our potato chips and baked potato crisps are currently non-GMO. While we do not support individual state by state labeling requirements due to the increased cost and consumer confusion this would create, we would welcome voluntary nationally standardized labeling of GMO ingredients in response to our consumers’ interest.
